Welcome to Stowe & Lake Champlain Region

Up in the northwest corner of Vermont, between Lake Champlain, Canada and the Northeast Kingdom you will find some of the prettiest scenery anywhere. The University of Vermont is in Burlington, at the center of the Lake Region. But all around, you'll find miles and miles of Vermont countryside. Whether you're looking do to some fishing on Lake Champlain, cross-country skiing, nature watching in the Missiquoi National Wildlife Refuge or checking out all six covered bridges in Montgomery, the Lake Region has something for you.

History buffs may find something of interest in Fairfield. Chester Arthur, the 21st President of the United States was born there. And, the northernmost battle of the Civil War, the Battle of St. Albans on October 10, 1864, was fought right there in St. Albans. Also, Ethan Allen's homestead was along the Winooski River right over by where Burlington is today.

If you're looking for something to eat, Burlington has all sorts of restaurants. And almost every weekend, you can find a local fair or festival serving up good Vermont fare. Don't miss South Hero's Apple Fest. They hold it every fall on the Canadian Thanksgiving Weekend. If that's too confusing to remember, just show up for the Columbus Day Weekend. You can get all the apples you want. And apple pie. And apple sauce. And apple crumb. And baked apples. And apple butter.

You can't come to the northwest corner of Vermont without stopping at Stowe. People usually come to Stowe for the skiing. But, you'll also find the Trapp Family Lodge and places to play golf or tennis, go horseback riding or even do a little fishing. And, since Alaska is a bit too far to go to see dogs pulling sleds, check out Eden Mountain Dogsledding and Green Mountain Dog Sled Adventures - they'll get you set up with your own sled. And, you'll learn what they mean when they say the view changes only for the lead sled dog.

Take the kids over to Shelburne to see them make teddy bears. Or explore the Shelburne Museum and find all sorts of paintings, folk sculpture, paintings, waterfowl decoys, circus memorabilia, quilts - just about anything you can think of.

So, come on up and explore, you'll find something to do.
