Welcome to Central Vermont
Central Vermont has all that Vermont has to offer right in the middle of the state. Most of Vermont's remaining dairy farms are in the central part of the state. Many are open for public tours. And, this is where the famous Vermont cheddar cheese comes from. In the Fall, you can take a trip to one of the many orchards and pick your own apples or pears, watch apple cider being made and taste some of the baked goods right from the oven. In the Springtime you'll be able to see how they make maple syrup and if you like, you can pick your own strawberries.
Vermont is also becoming known for its great wineries. You can stop by for a tour or attend a wine tasting event.
Central Vermont has hundreds of craftsmen and craftswomen making different types of artwork. You can visit the Simon Pearce glass factory to see, and maybe buy, some of the world's most elegant hand-blown glassware. Started in 1981, Simon Pearce now has a whole team working for him in their shop in a restored woolen mill on the Ottauquechee River.
If you prefer pottery to glassware, Robert Compton has been making pottery since his days at the University of Vermont in the late 1960s. He now has his studio in an old dairy barn and is happy to have visitors come in to watch while he works.
If you love music and antiques, The Porter Music Box Company over in Randolph still makes music boxes by hand. They do a wonderful job replicating the heirloom music boxes of Victorian Europe. These are not the small music boxes you put on your dresser. The Porter Music Box Company assembles the largest disc style music boxes produced anywhere in the world. And, they even use beautiful Italian wooden cabinets to house their music boxes.
On nice days in Vermont you can find all sorts of parks, trails and fairs. Vermont’s "Little Grand Canyon,” also known as Quechee Gorge, was formed by melting water as the glaciers receded. Route 4 crosses the gorge not far west of White River Jct, and gives you a beautiful view of the Ottauquechee River.
And finally, no trip to Vermont is complete without a trip to the famous Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Factory in Waterbury.
